Las Cruces firefighters are used to seeing flames upon arrival at a fire scene, but Tuesday afternoon they also had to keep an eye out for bullets.

They responded to the 1800 block of Highland Drive in central Las Cruces for a residential structure fire after 4 p.m.
The first arriving engine crew reported smoke coming from a garage. Fire crews were greeted by a large volley of exploding ammunition while trying to gain entry and extinguish the fire. The LCFD says the fire was contained to the garage within 10 minutes after initial dispatch. The homeowner stated to have “live rounds of ammunition” stored in the garage.

Five Las Cruces Fire Department units responded with eighteen personnel.

There were no reports of any firefighter or civilian injuries.

The fire is under investigation with no damage amount or cause determined.
