LAS CRUCES, N.M — Las Cruces Police, working with Crime Stoppers, are asking for the public's help in identifying the driver of an SUV who may have been trying to lure a child into a vehicle Wednesday afternoon.
The incident took place near Booker T. Washington Elementary School, shortly after school. Officials say the vehicle is described as a dark red or maroon Chevrolet Suburban.
According to Las Cruces Police, a parent of another child saw the driver of the SUV talking to a young boy, and attempting to lure him closer to his vehicle.
Police add that while no crime was committed, they are interested in talking with the driver of the Suburban.
In news release from Las Cruces Crime Stoppers, officials said "The parent told police that the young boy handled the situation perfectly. The boy told the driver "No," and then approached her as she stood by with her own children. The driver of the Suburban drove away and has not been seen again near the school."
Officials added that parents are encouraged to share this story with their young children and let them know what to do if they are faced with a similar situation.
The release also suggest that "Parents may also want to consider walking their young children to and from school, or ensure that their children walk with a partner and stay aware of their surroundings at all times."
Anyone with information that can help identify the driver of the late-model Suburban is asked to call Las Cruces Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or send a tip via text message to CRIMES (274637), keyword LCTIPS.
