Las Cruces City Council unanimously approved the instant impound ordinance this afternoon. The new city ordinance means police are not only coming for you but also your car.

The ordinance gives police the authority to impound a vehicle if the driver doesn't have insurance or a valid driver's license. Before, police could only give drivers a ticket.

City council members say this ordinance gives officers a tool to get repeat offenders off the road. Police say thousands of drivers continuously break the law by refusing to buy insurance. They hope this change pushes many to finally to get the protection required.

It's important to note, it is the burden of the officer to prove a driver is uninsured. Simply not having an insurance card with you doesn't mean you'll get towed.

Last week, the El Paso City Council considered a similar ordinance. They postponed the vote until more details were worked out.
