Anthony, TX - La Tuna Federal Prison administrators are in the process of releasing a statement addressing reports that the facility was on lockdown for 6 days due to threats over inmate violence, said a prison spokesperson.

Sources tell NewsChannel 9 that inmates went on a hunger and work strike to protest poor medical conditions last week.

According to staffers who wanted to keep their identities hidden, inmates sent a list of demands to the warden, saying if the demands were not met, they would resort to violence.

Sources tell us that prison administrators have now agreed to meet those demands, but this information has not yet been confirmed by prison leaders.

There are always 3 sides to every story. thier side our side and the truth...unfortunately as a mother of an inmate I see the power trips the authorities are on...if the shoe was on the other foot....??? Ultimately we all answer to a Higher Authority...many inmates need a hospital not prison . God help us all.

Just received a letter from my brother who is an inmate in La Tuna. The note is brief but states that the hunger strike was to protest the following: lack of medical care, lack of dental care, lack of optical care, harassment, retaliation, racism, policy and legal violations on the part of the staff and several additional issues. The letter is dated April 7, 2010 and postmarked April 8, 2010. I received it yesterday, April 13, 2010.

One minute you tell us that the Warden and staff have reached an agreement and will meet the demands of the inmates and now you post this. Have you actually checked this out or are you doing some assumptive reporting? Be honest channel 9 news...are you going to do anything about this or not?
Laraine in NC.

There was never any threats of violence to staff leaders. They were only asking to be treated like humans. Tell me would you eat food with bugs in it? I wouldn't, why should they just because they are in prison. Please Channel 9 grow a pair and go after the real story there. It is there all you have to do is a little investigating. Are you up for the job?

It's sad that a Federal Institution has resorted to pinching pennies at the expense of staff and inmates. Every single post should be manned by a correctional Officer. Have they not learned from USP Atwater when the Wardern there was vacating posts and an Officer paid the price with his life. Let alone the countless inmates that get assaulted and goes un noticed due to lack of staff and poor acountabilty. Just ask the popular Border Patrol Agents one whom got assaulted and nobody knew for days.
