While the sound of fireworks booming in the sky may be exciting for us humans, it can be downright frightening for our four-legged friends this Fourth of July. El Paso's Animal Services Department says the loud noises produced by fireworks can frighten family pets, causing them to escape from backyards to get away from the noise.

The City of El Paso Department of Public Health has provided the following tips to keep your pet safe this Independence Day:

1. Keep pets inside your home during Fourth of July celebrations.

2. Turn on a television or radio to help muffle the sounds of fireworks.

3. If you cannot keep your pet indoors, make sure they are supervised and provide extra security outside so that they cannot escape.

4. Do not take pets to firework displays.

5. Make sure your pets are wearing I.D. tags and that they have a microchip so that if they do become lost, they can be quickly identified.

6. If your pet is seriously distressed by loud noises, consult with a veterinarian for suggestions and calming medications.

7. If you do have a missing pet, you can contact Animal Services by calling (915) 842-1000 or by visiting us during normal business hours at 5001 Fred Wilson Rd. (across from the Fort Bliss Cemetery)
