In a teleconference with lawyers for convicted serial killer David Leonard Wood, Judge Bonnie Rangel of the 171st District Court announced Monday, she is voluntarily recusing herself from Wood's appeals case.
Rangel cited serious health issues she suffered in a recent car crash. She says she wants to avoid further delays in the case.
Retired Judge Peter Peca will now replace her. Peca was the original judge that presided over Wood's capital murder trial back in 1992.
Wood was scheduled to die this past August for killing six El Paso women, but in a last minute move, the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals issued a stay of execution. Lawyers argue Wood is mentally retarded and cannot be put to death. A trial date to determine his mental capacity has not been scheduled.
