It’s crunch time for those who haven’t signed up for health care

With only three days left before the close of open enrollment for health care, agencies like the Project Amistad are pushing to get people enrolled.

“We have been very busy. We have been taking appointments for a couple of weeks towards the very end of the enrollment period and we are booked solid,” said Roy Ortega, community relations manager for Project Amistad.

Ortega said they are unable to take walk-ins but are giving them information for other options.
Ortega also stresses the importance of enrolling online or over the phone because most organizations are only taking those with appointments.

Veronica Cruz-Montero, a navigator with Project Amistad said each appointment takes anywhere from an hour to an hour and a half.

The White House says over one million people visited on Monday alone, which is an indication of the high volume of last minute sign ups.

Linda Vasquez said she made an appointment with Project Amistad after trying to enroll over the phone.
She also said she waited until last minute because she wasn’t sure if it applied to her.

“I’m a part time worker and I was a little confused about whether or not I was going to be able to get insurance. And since I was already registered with the public clinic, I thought that was it,” Vasquez said.

Whatever the reason may be, Project Amistad said they are there to help applicants enroll.

“Some don't have access to a computer, some have literacy issues, some have language issues that prevents them from being able to conduct the entire enrollment on their own,” Ortega said.

Those who aren’t signed up for health care will be subject to a tax penalty. Those who have started enrolling but are unable to finish by the deadline will be given an extension until April 15.
