Carolina Bridge will be reconstructed

A Lower Valley street will be closing in order to reconstruct the crumbling Carolina bridge. City Council members addressed the issue in Monday's meeting.

City Representative Emma Acosta told us the Cadawalder Railroad crossing will be closing in June 2014 to make way for construction crews.

Acosta says the Ysleta School District will be the only one impacted by the closure. She says they are closing the intersection down in order to maintain the neighborhood's safety features.

"There are about 40 students that cross that intersection on a daily basis. And we saw them playing around, and we saw them trying to beat the train. And so we think that this is a safety precaution to ensure the safety of those kids. And to make sure that when they do cross, that with the pedestrian overpass it'll be much safer," Acosta said.

She also stated once the bridge is reopened the intersection will be permanently closed because the new pedestrian bridge will be set in place.
