El PASO, TX (KTSM) — A jail inmate escaped from custody this morning while at University Medical Center for treatment.
Omar Vicente Moran was in prison and charged with robbery, failure to identify a fugitive, and violating his parole.
This morning at around 6AM, the El Paso County Sheriff's Office took him to UMC from the jail for a check-up and that's when Moran got away.
Authorities say he escaped on foot and ran to a nearby water treatment plant to hide.
The El Paso Police Department, Sheriff's Office, El Paso Fire Department, and Border Patrol, among others, searched the plant on foot, while US Customs and Border Protection helicopters circled over head.
After a lengthy search, authorities finally spotted Moran, who then gave himself up to Sheriffs deputies at around 10:50AM, but wasn't caught in the same hospital gown he was wearing when he escaped.
"He was in a white hospital gown and when he was spotted in the plant, he was wearing jeans and a blue cap. So, we do not know where he got that but that will be under investigation," said Chris Acosta, spokesperson for the El Paso County Sheriff's Office.
The Sheriff's Office has not said why Moran needed medical attention in the first place. They transferred him to a different hospital for treatment after he was caught.
