Inappropriate contact charges to be dropped against Mayfield wrestling coach
LAS CRUCES, N.M. — Charges against a Mayfield wrestling coach accused of inappropriate contact with a minor will be dismissed, according to the Dona Ana County District Attorney's office.
Court records show Head Wrestling Coach Jimmy Nevarez was charged with criminal sexual contact of a minor, abuse of a child - intentional and harassment.
The district attorney's office said those charges will be dropped due to a procedural error.
Las Cruces Public Schools officials said Nevarez is on a year-to-year contract with the district and only works as a coach during wrestling season.
Nevarez has been a wrestling coach with the district since 1994 and head coach at Mayfield since 1998.
District officials said they are conducting an internal investigation and the superintendent has yet to determine whether Nevarez will be rehired next season.
The district attorney's office does plan on reopening the investigation and possibly charging Nevarez again in the future.
