Cockfighting is illegal in all 50 states.
Still, law enforcement says it's a long running, brutal practice that continues to go on.
Newschannel Nine had this archive video of a battle between two roosters.
Both are trained and equipped to fight to the death.
"It is gruesome it's bad, any cruelty to animal is gruesome."
Before becoming chief of police in Anthony Texas, Ed Miranda spent years working for the Dona Ana county Sheriff's Department.
During that time he handled several cockfighting cases.
In a cock fight two birds face off in an enclosed ring.
Owners tie sharp blades to the birds legs in order to give them a lethal kick.
The birds are also pumped full of steroids and other drugs to increase adrenaline.
On the sidelines dozens or even hundreds of spectators watch as the birds slice eachother to death.
For them it's all about the money.
The punishment for the cockfighting varies state to state.
In New Mexico where the latest bust took place it's only a misdemeanor.
In texas it's a felony.
Miranda says he hopes recent busts on cockfighting bring attention to this brutal bloodsport.
