Imminent danger pay cuts will have minimal impact in El Paso

Thousands of soldiers deployed will lose imminent danger pay soon. The U.S. defense department removed several locations from its list of areas that qualify for this benefit.

Military forces deployed in 20 areas including the Arabian Sea, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and Qatar will not be eligible for the stipend.

The imminent danger pay was created to help out military families and it consists of a 225 dollars incentive when a service member spends less than a full month in a qualifying area.

But according to Fort Bliss officials local soldiers should not worry as the overall impact in El Paso will be minimal.

Approximately 1,800 Fort Bliss soldiers are currently deployed and the majority of them are in Iraq or Afghanistan. Those locations are still on the list.

Fort Bliss spokesperson Lee Peters said this change will affect other service members in the Air Force and Navy.

“The biggest areas that will be affected are probably the air force and navy personal because a lot of the ports and the water ways have deemed out of the imminent danger pay and also the airspace over some of the countries has been determined not be in in danger pay,” Peters said.

The official press release indicates the U.S. defense department made the modifications after conducting a periodic review and recertification. These new changes go into effect on June 1st.

Areas removed from list:

■The four water areas of the Arabian Sea, Gulf of Aden, Gulf of Oman, and the Red Sea.
■The water area and air space above the Persian Gulf.
■The six land areas and air space above Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Serbia and Montenegro.
■The nine land areas of East Timor, Liberia, Haiti, Oman, Rwanda, Tajikistan, United Arab Emirates, Kyrgystan and Uzbekistan.
