Hundreds of students moved into campus housing at New Mexico State University Sunday morning.

University officials estimate anywhere between 1000 and 1500 students moved in during the first day dorms are open.

"It just means a lot," said Luis Gomez. "This is a big milestone,"

Gomez and his father spent the day getting the young freshman settled in, as did hundreds of other families with their students.

While the older Gomez said he he will miss his son, he's excited for the opportunities he'll receive on campus while furthering his education.

"It's going to be fun," Louie Gomez said. "There's a lot of things going on."

Gomez said he encourages his son to take part in as many activities as possible.

NMSU Director of Housing and Campus Life Julie Weber said studies show there are many benefits to living on campus.

"It increases your academic success and it increases your good feelings about your institution," Weber said.

She added on-campus living will also help students make friendship that could last a lifetime.

Gomez said living on campus is convenient, rather than driving in from El Paso, and he understands he has to make the most of the college experience.

"I feel like I'm being part of the university and closer to people around me," he said.

His father said he will miss him but he's only a phone call away and down the road in El Paso.

"He's going to be on his own, but we're close by," Gomez said.
