LAS CRUCES - Hundreds of people received free dental care during a two-day dental clinic in Las Cruces this weekend.

The clinic was put together by the New Mexico Mission of Mercy, the helping hand of the New Mexico Dental Foundation. About 1,400 volunteers helped treat nearly 1,600 patients during the two day event.

Brian Opper said he and his family decided to attend the clinic after hearing advertisements for it on the radio.

"We haven't had insurance since 2006 and with all the kids being able to get done with they got done, that was a big help," Opper said.

For two days the Las Cruces Convention Center was transformed into a full service dental clinic offering the same services that can be found in a dentist's office.

Patients were treated for fillings, root canals, and a variety of other procedures. All the procedures were completely free after local dentists volunteered their time to treat those in need.

The New Mexico Mission of Mercy hosts a dental clinic every year in the state. The group estimates the 1,600 people receiving treatment saved more than a million and a half dollars in dental care.
