Huge Fire in Las Cruces

POSTED: Thursday, November 13, 2008 - 8:00pm

UPDATED: Wednesday, February 17, 2010 - 3:22pm

A huge fire at the "Aldersshot Building" in Las Cruces has been burning for most of the day leading to several evacuations. The fire started burning just before 9 this morning.

It took fire crews several hours to get it under control. Most of the 25-thousand square foot building has been destroyed. While the fire is under control firefighters are still putting out hot spots.

The fire left a thick cloud of black smoke hovering over nearby neighborhoods for several hours.

Homeowners were asked to evacuate the area in case of hazardous chemicals in the air but that warning was later cancelled.

Authorities tell us firefighters from nearly every station in Dona Ana County were called to help fight the flames.

They tell us the big problem was there weren't enough hydrants in the area so they had to truck water in.

The biggest part of the fire is out but over the last couple of hours, several hot spots have rekindled.

No word on what caused the fire.
