How 'Sequester Cuts' will impact the Borderland

El Paso — The clock is ticking. As we inch closer to March 1st, lawmakers and the Obama Administration are no closer to finding a compromise to stop the automatic sequester cuts that will impact not only the nation, but El Paso and Las Cruces as well.
An almost $68 million cut to primary and secondary education, this is all according to a fact sheet the White House just released. Other states that would feel the greatest pinch in the classroom - California, New York, and Florida.
In New Mexico, the cuts would impact environmental funding, about $1.2 million dollars would be lost.
Borderland soldiers would also be impacted with an estimated $233 million that could be cut from the Army's budget.
In New Mexico, their Army's budget would be cut by $33 million. Residents are reacting, including on our Facebook page. Mari Cooper wrote, "Why doesn't the people in the White House cut their funding and their pay n see what happens then?"
