The consequences of the shutdown might not be fully known, but what we are sure of is that parts of the Federal government have shut down and that will have a direct impact on the Borderland.

The Chamizal National Memorial, White Sands National Monument, Carlsbad Caverns and Guadalupe National Park are just the national parks nearby, that will be closed starting Tuesday. National parks across the country will remain shut down until Congress agrees.

The lack of compromise angered one University of Texas at El Paso political science major.

"Knowing this is happening because some people can't get together to make a solution, is just infuriating," Joshua Rodriguez said.

Rodriguez, along with many across the country, are struggling to figure out how it all came to this.

"Especially with politics, things seem to be so complex it's harder to pay attention to something that has more than two sides," said Rodriguez.

Many government services and agencies would be closed, suspended or otherwise impacted.
The impact at Fort Bliss that will be one of the toughest. All active duty military will get a paycheck Tuesday, but if the shutdown lasts past October 7th, the next paycheck could be delayed.

"We do understand that this does impact a lot of people and it's nothing that we haven't prepared for, we are just going through the process and hope that tonight Congress is able to compromise and pass appropriation bills to fund the government so we don't have to face this for tomorrow," said LTC. Lee Peters of Fort Bliss.

Half of the civilian federal employees for the military will be furloughed with the governement shutdown and will only be paid after the fact, if Congress votes to do so.
Those remaining on the job would be paid retroactively after the shutdown ends.

Also for people who rely on government assistance, food stamps -- continue at least for one month. but wic, that helps pregnant women and children, would shut down immediately.
