No noise is sweeter in a down economy like the sound of a crane. That's because construction is often considered the backbone to an expanding economy.

With big projects at Fort Bliss, Texas Tech, and UTEP, you'd think El Paso would be one of the few cities where construction jobs are actually growing.

And while that may be the case right now for commercial construction, residential building has been steadily declining. Some experts are nervous that when these big commercial projects are complete, jobs will be lost.

"We've got to also be very concerned though with new home construction in El Paso," said Randy O'Leary, president of the El Paso Builder's Association. "If you look at January 1 through June 31, building permits are off right at about 19%."

Tonight on News Channel 9 at 10 we'll hear from an economics professor at UTEP who will break down what these construction job losses could mean for our economy.
