On Tuesday night, lawmakers in Austin tentatively approved a controversial abortion bill that's been the center of national attention.

After an almost 10 hour standoff between supporters, opponents,  and protests across the state, a controversial abortion bill will most likely move forward to the Texas State Senate.

"It's not entirely surprising. It was a pretty much party-line vote," said State Rep. Naomi Gonzalez.

House lawmakers passed HB 2 by a 98 to 49 vote.

If it passes in the Senate, women would not be able to have an abortion after 20 weeks of being pregnant. At the moment, women can terminate a pregnancy up until 24 weeks.

All abortions would also have to be perfomed in a surgical center, not an ordinary clinic, no further than 30 miles from a hospital.

In El Paso, two clinics would shut down.

"Women, for example, in Far West Texas, El Paso, rural areas, the Rio Grande Valley, would now have to travel to places like San Antonio, Dallas, or Houston," said Gonzalez.

Supporters argue the regulations improve the quality of health care for women.

"More women die during childbirth than they do having then they do having an abortion procedure," insisted Gonzalez.

Gonzalez joined colleagues in Austin on Tuesday, and said 14 amendments that were proposed to the bill were all shot down -- including exceptions for rape and incest victims, and providing sexual education in schools to curb unwanted pregnancies.

"Some of the more common sense amendments would be to have the exceptions for rape and incest," she said.

Nevertheless, Gonzalez remains 'cautiously optimistic.'

"Once it leaves the House, it can take on a life of its own," she said.

Lawmakers will reconvene Wednesday morning for a final approval of the bill.

No one should have the right to dictate what you should or shouldnt do with your body unless it is a life/death situation or your a danger to yourself and that life. But at same token i dont think that one should be irresponsibile and have abortions just for hell of it. Think you should get tubes tied or get a semi perminate birthcontrol system to prevent pregantcy and or limit being permiscuous. Grow up be responsible and accept consequences to actions. Being a parent is awsome.

Having a baby is not like deciding to buy a car you really need to be stable and happy and in love with the idea of wanting to be responisible for a mini you at all times for the rest of your life.

Now i did not find out i was pregos till i was 12 weeks and thats because of a medical condition that masked the pregnautcy. So i can see where one does need that 24 weeks meaning i would have needed 2 weeks to decide if i should go through an abortion and how it would impact my health and my life and only because of my medical condition. Everyone needs adequate time to think and analisis their reasons and obsticles regarding the abortion. LIFE is priveledge but lots responsibilitie.

I was not aware of the time limits regarding an abortion, i thought people chose to get an abortion as soon as they found out they were prego, which is usually was within a couple weeks after they miss their first period. Rare is the time that it takes 12 weeks before you find out you are pregos and thats only because you have an underlying medical condition which prevented you from finding out sooner. I think 20 weeks is good, And im saying from my experience, I wanted to a baby but strugled
