Going from 5,000 residents in the year 2000 to more than tripling in size in the past decade, Horizon city is starting to see big projects coming their way.

In less than a month, Horizon City will have a friendly neighborhood store to shop in.

But that's not all; the bigger story here is the rapid growth this small city has experienced.

"We finally got three or four traffic lights,” said Gary Anderson, who has lived in Horizon for about five years. “Four years ago we only had one."

The city is home to more than 17,000 residents, and little by little new stores have been popping up here and there. But as one Horizon resident puts it, the real growth has blossomed in the past two years.

"The past two years have been growing a lot,” said Gabriel Alvarez, who has made Horizon city his home for about 2 years. “There are a lot more residential areas around Eastlake, you have the Zumba business, La Pila and we got here and there little stuff."

The latest project near completion is the Wal-Mart store off of Horizon and Darrington. And for some Horizon residents this was something long overdue.

“It’s a super huge development that we have all been waiting for a while already," said Felina Perez resident of Horizon for 8 years.

One Wal-Mart employee who is also a Horizon resident said it was a headache having to travel to El Paso just to buy the essentials.

"We don't have to drive into town to El Paso you know to go to other Wal-Mart’s,” said Edgar Enriquez. “It would be a drive of like maybe 15 minutes you know plus now we are going to be like I’m like 5 minutes away from here."

Horizon's mayor said it’s only the prelude of bigger and better things to come.

"We’ve always been a residential community,” said Walton Miller, Horizon Mayor. “And now we are trying to prepare for more diversified tax base. We are seeing more retail coming in now we hope to build our commercial side of it now."

As the city continues to grow some residents have a few suggestions of their own as to what they would like to see in their home town.

"They need to open up more youth centers and hopefully with all these new businesses, they'll do that," said Anderson.

Aside from the Wal-Mart, Horizon residents will soon be able to enjoy a Whataburger and Taco Bell which will be located across from the neighborhood store.

My name is Tracy. I live in Horizon City. I now have lived in Horizon City going on 4 years. When I heard that they were going to build a Walmart in Horizon City, I was so relieved and happy. I love to go shopping at Walmart. They have good prices. Now I won't have to waste so much gas just to go to a Walmart that's 20 to 25 minutes away. The Walmart in Horizon City is walking distance for me. This Walmart is the best thing that ever happened to Horizon City.
