Sometimes prepping for the holidays can cause more harm than good.

Just last year, the Consumer Product Safety Commission reported more than 13,000 people were treated for holiday decorating-related injuries - a jump from previous years.

Here are some tips for avoiding holiday mayhem from www.build.com

When working at low and medium heights, choose step stools or utility ladders

Extension laddersare ideal for use outdoors to reach high places, such as hanging items from the rooftop - the weight the ladder is supporting should never exceed its maximum load capacity. Also, do not stand on furniture for indoor decorating - use a step ladder

Inspect the ladder before use to ensure there are no loose rungs or screws (clean rungs before use)

Set up the ladder on a firm, smooth piece of ground close to your work area

Use only lights that have been tested for safety by a nationally recognized testing laboratory, such as UL. UL's red holographic label signifies that the product meets safety requirements for indoor and outdoor usage.

Also, check each set of lights, new or old, for broken or cracked sockets, frayed or bare wires, or loose connections. Throw out damaged sets and do not use electric lights on a metallic tree.

When buying an artificial tree, look for the label "Fire Resistant."

Although this label does not mean that the tree will not catch fire, it does indicate that the tree is more resistant to catching fire.

Trimmings with small removable parts out of the reach of children who could swallow or inhale small pieces, and avoid trimmings that resemble candy or food that may tempt a child to eat them.

Candles are a magical way to get into the Christmas spirit, but make sure you extinguish all candles before you go to bed, leave the room, or leave the house. Battery powered candles  are also a great alternative and with a simple on/off switch, ensure a peaceful and silent night.
