Hispanic leaders awarded for community contributions
EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — Seven hispanic leaders were recognized for their contributions to the Borderland Thursday in the 14th Annual McDonald's Hispanos Triunfadores Awards.
The public submitted their nominees for the award, and the winners were chosen based on their contributions and for being a positive role model for children in the community.
One of the awardees, County Attorney JoAnne Bernal, hopes the event inspires children.
"I hope that the kids really get the message that really all things are possible. There are so many opportunities, there's no excuse why any child in our community doesn't go to college, doesn't get an education and doesn't become whatever version of success that they'd like to be," she said.
The seven honorees are Estela Casas (arts), Janet Aguilar (business), Joe Gomez (community service), Dr. Carmen Olivas Graham (education), County Attorney JoAnne Bernal (government), Dr. Renato J. Aguilera (sciences), and Dr. James Vasquez (lifetime achievement).
