After days of searching, father and son Robert and Austin Fritz are safe and sound according to Ruben Gonzalez of the New Mexico Search and Rescue team.

The pair went on a five day backpacking trip through the Gila Wilderness the day after Christmas, but never made it home because of the blizzard.

Robert, 55, and Austin, 15, were stranded in temperatures as low as 15 below 0 over the weekend.

Gonzalez says they never built a fire to stay warm and that was smart. Instead, they huddled inside of their tent and sleeping bags.

Almost two feet of snow fell over the weekend making it impossible to hike back and make it home.

A helicopter manned by Border Patrol spotted them early this morning.

Both the father and son refused any medical attention from the Gila Regional Hospital.

Why would the father refuse med attention for his son? that's strange, specially for that many days, maybe there is more to it.
