Ysleta Independent Board Members voted to approve an increase on employees' health insurance premiums Tuesday.

As NewsChannel 9 has reported, some school district employees were frustrated after the district's human resources department wanted to increase insurance deductibles to rates employees say is too high.

"It is an opportunity for the employees to have choices and they themselves can pick what is affordable for their particular situation," said Dr. Anna Perez, YISD's interim superintendent.

The district has not asked teachers to contribute more into the health plan in seven years, said Perez.

Even with the increase, the district is still covering more than 64 percent of the plan costs, she said.

"Those with families are really going to put out a lot of money, and the raise does not cover it," said Ysleta Teachers Association President Arlinda Valencia.

Every worker has a right to insurance cover. Though rules slightly differ across states; but there are some basics applicable to all states. However, not employees are well aware of that and need to increase their level of knowledge about such issues.
