90-year-old man arrested after hacking wife to death...
Greenville, SC -- A 90-year-old South Carolina man is behind bars after allegedly killing his wife with a hatchet Tuesday morning.
Spartanburg County Sheriff Chuck Wright said deputies were called to a Moore home at about 7:25 a.m. after a 911 call came from a grandson of William and Jeanette Martin.
When deputies arrived they found the grandson standing over his grandfather, who was sitting in a chair.
Deputies said the grandson had taken the hatchet away from Martin and had put it in a hallway.
Jeanette Martin, 85, was found on the floor of her bedroom near the door.
She was pronounced dead at the hospital.
The coroner said she died from sharp and blunt force trauma to the head.
William Martin has been charged with murder.
He is being held in the Spartanburg County Detention Center awaiting a bond hearing.
Wright said it is a "very sad" situation and the scene was "pretty bad."
Wright said William Martin was first taken to a hospital to be checked out
because of his advanced age.
He said the couple "argued about something simple and it turned into a death investigation this morning."
During a news conference, Wright said more than once, "Pray for this family. It's very traumatic."
