Officers Find Loaded Handgun on Battery Suspect
Quick thinking by the victim of an assault – and a helpful call to 911 by her 7-year-old son – kept a frightening situation from escalating into something much worse and led to the arrest of the perpetrator who was carrying a loaded handgun.
Andre Knight, 31, of Desoto, Texas, was arrested Wednesday evening and is charged with one count each of battery against a family member, false imprisonment and aggravated residential burglary.
Shortly before 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 23, Las Cruces Police were called to the 2600 block of Nebula Way where Knight was holding his ex-wife against her will. Detectives learned that Knight, who has a restraining order in Texas that prohibits him from contacting the woman, travelled to New Mexico to confront the 30-year-old who he’s been divorced from since April.
After forcing his way into the home Knight assaulted his ex-wife and held her in a bathroom. At some point during the altercation, the woman asked Knight if she could remove her children from a bedroom so they wouldn’t see what was happening. When the woman stepped out of the bathroom, she handed her 7-year-old son a cell phone and told him to call 911.
The boy called 911 and Las Cruces Police officers arrived and found Knight and the woman in the backyard. Knight was detained and officers later located a loaded .38 caliber handgun concealed in his backpack.
The woman’s injuries appeared to be relatively minor.
Knight is being held at the Dona Ana County Detention Center with a cash-only bond set at $30,000.
