Gunman Forces Lockdown of Las Cruces Schools

UPDATE:  12:50 p.m.  The lockdown of three Las Cruces schools has been lifted.  The burglary suspect who triggered the lockdown by firing his gun is still at large.

LAS CRUCES - A gunman has forced the lockdown of several Las Cruces schools including Onate High School, Sonoma Ranch Elementary and Highland Elementary.

Two daycares are also on lockdown.

Police are looking for a suspect who fired a gun during a burglary attempt in the Four Hills neighborhood.

The suspect is described as Black, wearing a black bandana and baseball cap and armed with a handgun.

Shortly before 11 a.m., police were called to the 3200 block of Eagle Ridge Drive, near Highway 70 and north Roadrunner Parkway, after a homeowner interrupted a burglary attempt. The suspect was said to have fired at least one round from a handgun.

No injuries have been reported.

Public schools and daycares in the area of Northrise Drive and Roadrunner Parkway have been placed on a temporary lockdown while officers search for the suspect.

Anyone with information on the identity, or whereabouts, of the suspect is asked to call 911 immediately.
