EL PASO - An airline passenger found a gun inside a bathroom at the El Paso International Airport on Tuesday.
She found the gun in a women's restroom that was beyond the security checkpoint. The airport tells us the weapon belongs to a female federal agent.
"I think it's ridiculous that someone would leave their gun in the restroom, and be that irresponsible, particularly somebody that works for the government," Maurine Hoffman said.
Airport authorities took possession of the gun, and now the Transportation Security Administration is investigating. Airport Spokeswoman Liz Bellegarde wouldn't talk about the incident on-camera, citing the on-going investigation. We called a spokesman for the TSA, but they have not returned our calls. They aren't talking, but airline passengers are.
"It infuriates people. Instances like this could possibly cause riots, who knows, to get answers and see what the airport will do in the future to prevent situations like this from happening," Lauren Causey said.
Not only does it anger people, it makes some of them feel less safe.
"They could have taken that gun on the plane. So it was stupid," Rosalio Arellano said.
"You want to go and see your family, you want to be able to have them come and see you, but things like this, it's almost like you don't want to take a chance on that," Causey said.
"It doesn't bother me at all. The chance of it falling into the wrong hands are slim to none. I mean the mail doesn't even get screened anyway," Dan Harrist said.
"I don't feel safe at all with that kind of thing," Hoffman said.
Some people say the federal agent who left that gun in the restroom should be punished or even fired.
"The general public's going to come down hard if instances like this continue to occur," Causey said.
