EL PASO--- After a day and a half of deliberations, a jury has handed down a verdict in the case of a Fort Bliss soldier accused of murdering his baby god-daughter.
After deliberating for two days, a jury found Nakia Dawkins, 33, guilty of injury to a child.
That's a lesser charge than the one he was facing of capitol murder.
Prosecutors argued Dawkins was responsible for the beating death of two-year-old Milayna Harris back in April 2008.
Dawkin's defense attorney, Theresa Caballero, called Saturday's verdict a victory.
"if it had been capitol murder it would have been automatic life. There would have been no punishment phase. That's what the state wanted," said Cabellero. ".... we're going to be looking at the lowest punishment possible."
The punishment phase of the trial starts Monday.
Dawkins is facing between five and 99 years in prison.
Prosecutors didn't comment after the trial.
Throughout the trial, Caballero argued that it was her client's wife, Shantrell Dawkins, who was responsible for the child's death.
She's currently in jail awaiting trial.
