Nine physician specialty groups have released a list of commonly used tests and treatments that most patients don't really need.
The list is part of a new campaign called “Choosing Wisely,” designed to empower patients and lower healthcare costs.
Experts say most patients don't need chest x-rays before surgery, or MRIs for back pain.
Antibiotics should not be used to treat sinus infections in most cases, and EKGs are not necessary during a routine physical.
Patients have the right to request these tests after discussing the risks and benefits with their doctor, and there's no sign insurers will stop covering them after the release of this list.
