Grand jury decides not to prosecute El Paso police officer for killing man
El Paso, Texas (KTSM) — A grand jury has decided an El Paso police officer should not be prosecuted in the shooting death of an El Paso bodybuilder.
Daniel Saenz was shot and killed after police say he "violently" fought with officer Jose Flores outside the downtown jail back in March of last year.
Flores reportedly tased him, then shot and killed him while he was handcuffed. An autopsy later showed Saenz had steroids in his system.
Flores' attorney says the decision brings some relief for the officer, but Flores' actions may still get him in trouble with the police department.
"There are standards police are held to that are higher than those for civilians. And though there isn't criminal intent here, the department has to look at his actions a little more critically than the law allows in general," said police chief Greg Allen.
The administrative investigation is expected to wrap up in April.
