Two young brothers are learning it is better to give than to receive.

When they heard some kids might wake up on Christmas morning with an empty tree, they decided to step up and help.

Everything was all set at the Child Crisis Center of El Paso, for a big toy donation from local singer "El Komander."

That is, until organizers heard the singer's lyrics.
They talk about drugs and violence, and some of the kids here have been affected by those crimes.

So the event was cancelled.

"I could not allow an individual, even with good intention such as he had, with representing that kind of background to come in to kids who are victims. It just didn't sit well with me," said Al Velarde, of the Child Crisis Center.

Miguel Rodriguez, 5, and his four-year-old brother Julian heard about what happened from their grandparents.

They decided something had to be done to help.

'Since they have a lot of stuffed animals that are never used, they are just sitting there, we talked to them and decided to go ahead and donate them to the kids so they can have a wonderful Christmas," said Rosa Vargas, the boys' grandmother.

The two brothers know their donations will help bring a smile to a child's face on Christmas morning.

"Because the boys and girls don't have toys for Christmas. So when the boys and girls have they toys they are going to be happy," said Miguel.

And their grandparents aren't only happy to help donate, but to teach their grandsons the true meaning of Christmas.

"So they can learn small the value and the giving of gifts. It's not only me me me. It's about spreading the love," said Vargas.

It's a lesson the Crisis Center hopes will also inspire others in El Paso to help a child in need.

To drop off a donation, go to the Child Crisis Center at 2100 N. Stevens St.
