El Paso, TX (KTSM) — You may think you've got a green thumb, but even the finest gardeners among us could probably learn a thing or two from Dorothy Wheeler. The 71 year-old grandmother takes a lot of pride in her garden, but even she was a little shocked by what she pulled out of the ground last Friday.
"Ooh, look at this. I said, you got to see this! I was kind of frightened of it when i saw it. I couldn't believe it," she said.
It was a sweet potato, larger than most newborns, and heavier than some dogs. It weighed a whopping eight pounds, more than four times the size of a typical tuber.
"I call them my monsters. I should have dug them up for Halloween," she said.
So what's the secret to Dorothy's sweet potato success? Well, she says that's actually not much of a secret.
"I used the Miracle Grow."
But she's never grown them grow quite so big. Until now, the closest she's come to gardening glory is a beautiful bunch of collard greens.
"They had leaves so big my daughter said, momma, those collard greens look like they're on crack cocaine," she said.
This gardening grandma is going to have a tough time topping her latest feat, but she says she's up for the challenge.
'I'm gonna try and do it again next year! "
Although she admits, she's got a sweet potato pie or two to make before she does.
