Christmas card proceeds to benefit kids with cancer
El Paso, Texas (KTSM) — As we near Christmas, holidays cards begin to start filling our mailboxes. The Candlelighters of El Paso are offering a way to help your card stand out, while also supporting their cause.
6 members of the Candlelighters family have designed Christmas cards that are available for purchase, with 100 percent of the proceeds going towards the families.
Each artist has been affected by cancer in some form.
"Candlelighters provides us with a lot of different opportunities to grow," said Crystal Duran, 21, a UTEP junior who suffers from leukemia. Duran participates in Candlelighter's Equine Therapy program, and she says it "really showed me the joy horses can bring, and really helped me while I was going through a hard time."
That's why she chose a horse being ridden by a gingerbread man as the theme for her Christmas card, said Duran.
Beate Burdette, the director of development, says Candlelighters supports 1,200 families in the Borderland, and these families lean on them even more during the holidays.
"As you can imagine it's really tough on families," she said. "They can spend months in hospital, so the holidays get a back seat to what they're doing."
