Call it a reverse boycott.  Customers showed up for "Chick-fil-A appreciation day" by the thousands on Wednesday, leading to traffic snarl, long lines, and a lot of chicken sandwiches.

Executive Vice President Steve Robinson said it was a record-setting day. Chick-fil-A did not release exact sales numbers.

Chick-fil-A came under criticism last week for its president's public opposition to gay marriage.

However, the company had supporters, particularly with former presidential candidates Mike Huckabee and Rick Santorum.  Both urged people to support traditional values by visiting the restaurant in what they dubbed Chick-fil-A appreciation day.

The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, or GLAAD, is backing a "National Same-Sex Kiss Day" planned for Chick-fil-A restaurants nationwide today.

Organizers of today's event are hoping for a similar turnout.  They are asking same-sex couples to go to Chick-fil-A restaurants and kiss in protest, and then post a video or photos on social media.

As of early Friday morning, about 13-thousand people had RSVP'd to attend on the event's Facebook page.
