HORIZON - Family and friends of a pregnant 17-year-old who was killed in a car accident on Wednesday, gathered today, to raise money for the victim's family.
A school community gathered at the parking lot of Horizon HS today, to hold a fundraiser for the family of Nelly Pizarro, who was killed along with her unborn child, after a car crashed into her.
"We're raising money for my friend, Nelly. We all loved her. She was like my sister," said Brenda Vega, a friend of the victim's.
The event was a car wash. Organizers set a goal of raising $5,000 for funeral expenses that would go to Nelly's family. Friends remember her as someone who was full of life.
"Nelly was just so important to all of us because she would motivate people to do things. She was really strong," said Daisy Parsley, a friend and classmate of the victim's.
Jonathan Avila was also a friend of Pizarro's. He said of the victim, "She was always happy. We loved her."
Lydia Rivas, a teacher of Pizarro's told us it was a shame the girl's life was cut short. She described the mother-to-be as ambitious, and said she was working hard towards a career that would benefit her unborn baby.
"Nelly was a very, very professional girl. She really hoped to do cosmetology and be able to take care of her baby with that career. And she was really starting to go very far," said Rivas.
Horizon police said they filed a charge against the driver for not yielding. However, so far, no arrest have been made.
