El Paso Police Sergeant Miguel Lucero has been fired for having an inappropriate relationship with a high school student.
The matter is considered so serious, the chief of police called a news conference today. The sergeant is accused of having an inappropriate relationship with an underage girl while working off-duty as a school resource officer.
While the criminal investigation is on-going, police say they have enough information to determine there was an inappropriate relationship, so they fired him.
"How does this make me feel?" Chief Gregory Allen asked. "Not very good, I can tell you that."
Police Chief Gregory Allen was visibly upset as he talked about his decision to fire police sergeant Miguel Lucero of the Pebble Hills Regional Command.
"Sergeant Lucero engaged in inappropriate relationships with a female student," Allen said.
Lucero worked off-duty at Riverside High, in the Ysleta Independent School District, as a resource officer.
Chief Allen says the inappropriate relationship was reported by the victim's boyfriend in mid-September. That's when Lucero's ability to work off-duty was suspended and the department began investigating. Lucero was placed on administrative duty early last month.
"The allegations were pretty sound that's why I'm able to take this immediate action as opposed to other cases," Allen said.
Lucero has had one other complaint sustained against him in his 12 years on the force. Police wouldn't give us the details of that case today. We just know it was an off-duty incident resulting in a written-reprimand.
"The El Paso Police Department will always take matters such as this very seriously and take the appropriate action," Allen said.
With a commander, assistant chief, and deputy city manager among the attendees of today's press conference. Chief Allen calls this a gross violation of EPPD core values and that Lucero should have known better.
"When it's an officer that's taking advantage because of his maturity or the fact that he's dealing with a younger person, that should not, that goes without saying, in my opinion, not to be doing that," Allen said.
We still don't know Lucero's age, or if there could be any other victims. The criminal investigation is ongoing, so he has not yet been booked on any charges.
