EL PASO- The new year has not eased the violence across the border. Two of the latest victims are El Paso students, gunned down last weekend.
A somber mood was very apparent in the halls of Cathedral High School today, as students and faculty tried to comprehend the loss of two of their own.
Carlos Mario Gonzalez Bermudez and Juan Carlos Echeverri were both sophomores at the private catholic school.
They and a third boy, Cesar Yalin Miramontes Jimenez, had crossed into Juarez last Friday night for a party.
Shopping for a used car the next day, they were killed in a hail of gunfire outside of a dealership. Friends say they were just in the wrong place a the wrong time, as a teacher remembers Bermudez.
"Carlos was a sophomore in my chemistry class. The kids were really upset about losing him, he was well liked," said his chemistry teacher Patricia Vega.
Only Carlos and Juan Carlos went to Cathedral, as Cesar attended school in Juarez. Friends tell us the three were very close, and say their deaths have put the school into a state of shock.
A rosary service for the boys is set for Thursday morning.
