The month of June is known as national Adopt-A-Cat month and the Animal Service Center of the Mesilla Valley is adopting out free adult cats during the entire month.

ASCMV Director Dr. Beth Vesco-Mock said a lot of time adult cats are overlooked because of the adorableness of kittens.

"Kittens are cute but they do grow up in less than a year to be an adult cat," Vesco-Mock said.

She added cats have the highest euthanasia rates through the country because of the high population.

ASCMV averages an intake of about 5000 cats a year and they typically have to kill about 3000 of them.

Vesco-Mock said the shelter is on track to euthanize about two-thirds of the cats they receive.

"January through April, we have killed 62 percent of the cats that have come in here," said Vesco-Mock.

With free adult cat adoptions Vesco-Mock said that can help reduce the number of cats put down during the summer months when cats are most prevalent.

The free adoption includes spay and neutering and all the required shots.
