San Miguel, NM--- A fourth of the student body is out sick at an area school, said Gadsden School District administrators.
The Gadsden Dep. Super. says 100 of the more than 400 students at the school were absent from school Thursday. Nurses report students coming in and out of their offices with flu-like symptoms, including fevers.
However, no confirmation that any of them are diagnosed with the H1N1 flu strain.
Parents reported that a field trip for kindergarteners scheduled for Friday was canceled because of the large amount of absences.
School administrators have sent out newsletters repeatedly to parents, telling them to keep kids home if they're sick.
Administrators hope the fall break, which starts Monday, couldn't come at a better time.
Students will be off for the next two weeks, which could give them some time to get better and stop the spread of the illness.
District administrators are not worried by the large amount of absences here though, because district-wide they are still at a seven percent absentee rate, which is only slightly higher than normal.
