LAS CRUCES, N.M. -- The Las Cruces Police Department continues their homicide investigation into a deceased man found in an irrigation canal off of Amador Avenue Friday evening.

Police found the body covered in a blanket in a canal on Amador Avenue and McSwain Drive at about 6 p.m. after they said a woman saw what she thought looked like a body and called police.

"It's on ongoing investigation and it's unfolding as we speak," said Las Cruces Police Spokesperson Wallace Downs Friday evening.

Police have not identified the victim, but said he had blunt force trauma to the head.

Downs said the man could have been in the canal anywhere between 12 to 24 hours from when they found him.

Across the street on Amador Avenue is Camp Hope or as it's come to be known now as "Tent City".

James Sassak, who is in charge of security at Camp Hope, said they have become more vigilant after the homicide.

He said violence at the camp is always low and they rarely ever have to call police.

"We're just concerned it doesn't reflect bad on the homeless people cause we don't know who actually did it so we're just waiting for the police's investigation," Sassak said.

He added they see a lot of homeless people passing through the area on a regular basis due to their proximity to the freeway.

Sassak said he wouldn't be surprised if the victim or suspect might have been new to the area.

The Las Cruces Gospel Rescue Mission is also near the scene.

Mission officials said they did not know the victim and had not seen him at the mission.

The investigation is on-going and they are asking for anybody with any information to call or text Crimes Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or by text to 274637 (CRIMES) key word -LCTIPS
