SOCORRO - Luis Varela, indicted on drug charges, has plead guilty. He was arrested in November for trying to sell more than 40 pounds of marijuana to undercover sheriff's deputies and for having 28 grams of cocaine. But he won't be going to jail.

Court documents show Varela could've faced life in prison for delivery of marijuana and possession of cocaine. Instead, it's costing him 10 years of probation time and 500 hours of community service.

He won't be allowed to buy alcohol in Texas, he has to check in to a probation officer once a month, and he has a curfew of 10 p.m. He also has to pay about $1,800 in court fees and fines for both offenses. He can't own a gun and he has to take drug education classes.

We asked the district attorney's office to elaborate on the plea deal but they only said, "The facts and circumstances of the case and his eligibility for probation were all considerations in the state's plea agreement."

The city of Socorro says while it doesn't comment on the private matters of its leaders, "Socorro does generally support all of our district courts and any decision handed down. We also hope those decisions help make our community a better place to live."

We tried reaching Varela and his attorney, but neither returned our calls. We also called the Sheriff's office for comment but have yet to hear back.

This is outrageous JUDGE!This is why people leave this city because it continues to do favors for the crooked and punish the less fortunate when it comes to breaking the law. It's senseless to have investigations on our supposedly city officials and only punish some of them.No justice!El Pasoans aren't naive. Despite what you may think, there are many educated individuals here-but obviously you prefer to keep ignorance on your side-JOB SECURITY. Way to go!High tourism on it's way-yeah right.C-ya

It is totally hypocritical to allow this official to be allowed to not do any jail-time,when the city and the county is cracking down and arresting any individual driving drunk. Although I do not drink licquor, this attitude only shows to me that it is who you know, that gets these individuals a free pass, and a slap on the wrist. This along with the fact that we have numerous city and county individuals in federal prison, makes El Paso the 2nd safest city, yes, now we can add the most corrupt.

I told you so, this is just the beginning of these CHARACTERS more or les getting off practically scott free, sending the message, in El Paso, if you have the money, the judges will let you go, expect more of the same coming soon, wait for tomorrow's news!!!!

What a flippin' joke!! He deserves to serve time!! Anyone else that would have been busted with that much pot/coke would have been behind bars! I also think him being on the city council in Socorro he should be held to a higher standard and they should have made a example out of this clown!!

Are you serious? WOW talk about getting away with murder! 40 pounds! 28 Grams of Cocaine! Probation? Plea deal? Sounds like a bunch of bs going on here in El Paso! People go to jail for much less illegal drugs! What is going on in this city of corruption?

OMG... only ten years probation, come on. If it was our average Joe he would have been locked up for more than ten years.
