MEXICO CITY— Seven months after being kidnapped, a former Mexican presidential candidate was freed Monday.
Diego Fernandez de Cevallos, a Mexican political power broker who unsuccessfully ran for Mexico's presidency in 1994, had been missing since May when his vehicle was found near his ranch in the state of Queretaro.
Photos were reportedly released by kidnappers five days after Fernandez de Cevallos' car was found showing Fernandez de Cevallos blindfolded, shirtless, and thin.
His family then released a statement to the news media asking authorities to help them with negotiations by staying out of the case. The Attorney General's Office said it had agreed to the family's request and had not become involved. They would not comment on Fernandez de Cevallos' release.
Fernandez de Cevallos did not comment on his kidnappers or their intentions to the media, and did not say whether a ransom had been paid.
