EL PASO - Former Miss El Paso USA Lorena Tavera is under arrest for theft in a local shoplifting case.

Police responded to the Dillards store at 750 Sunland Park on Friday night.

Investigators say Tavera stole a shirt valued at $69.

Tavera's professional background includes runway modeling, freeze modeling, spokes modeling, commercials, pictorials and print work.

The 21-year-old captured the crown of Miss El Paso Teen USA 2006; where she went on to place top 15 at the Miss Texas Teen USA pageant. In 2008 Lorena won the title of Miss El Paso USA and placed 6th at Miss Texas USA.

When NewsChannel 9 reached Tavera over the phone Monday morning, she said, "I'm going to contact my lawyer. This story can't be run. The story is wrong first of all. It's been misconstrued and it's twisted, so I need to contact my lawyer... I can't talk to you until I talk to my lawyer."

Police said Tavera also had two outstanding Municipal Court traffic warrants.

Jail records show Tavera bonded out of jail on Saturday.

Really? The employees held her against her will there till the police arrived. So, those employees were fired right? In retail you can not detain or hold a person suspected of stealing, as an employee. Look it up people. How many of you here on this post work in retail, and your manager has asked you, "hold that shopper if you think they stole or you saw them steal?" Crickets right? Miss Tavera should've just ran, but then again she does pageants for a living.

Actually, a store CAN hold a person suspected of shoplifting for "as long as necessary to conduct an investigation". It's called "Shopkeeper's Privilege". Look it up, yourself. It's the law in all 50 states.

My daughter who is only 13 was held against her will even after I got there for 4 1/2 hrs until police arrived by Claire's employees. When I contacted a lawyer, I was told the store can hold someone for as long as it takes the police to arrive which in El Paso's case, FOREVER. They even had her and her friends stand in frontof the window with all the stuff they had stolen in front of them. Needless to say, my daughter has not tried to steal again.

Yes, as I mentioned above, the rule is called "Shopkeeper's Privilege", which allows a store to hold a person suspected of theft for "a reasonable time in order to conduct a reasonable investigation". What is "reasonable" is not specific, but upi to an hour or so might be ok, but several hours would be extreme. When the lawyer you contacted said "as long as it takes for the police to arrive", I'm sure that was not an open-ended statement, that the police can take all day if they want to.

I'd let her rob me so hard.

el servio, this girl got caught shoplifting, plain and easy, you walk out of a store with an item, you have not paid for, DUH!! shoplifting, STEALING!! The Lord had nothing to do with this, it was pure simple greed and disrespect, where was YOUR Lord on this, why did he/she not stop her. Stop your silly/stupid religious rants on serious stuff like this. Your illogical religious rants only perpetutate more bad behavior from your dumb followers.

This is what happens when you spoil your kids and don't teach them to be hard working civilians like the rest of us. What a disgrace. Embarrassed El Paso, UTEP, and modeling.

omg I always see this girl downtown! too embarassing

We all make mistakes. End of story.

Quickly...get her to therapy...She needs to find out WHY she did this???..Is she on meds or what?...poor girl needs to get a real job!

she got some street cred now, she can roll wit "dem dam keyids" in the 915 anytime.

I know this chic how embarassing

how do you know her?

A $69 shirt what is wrong with her.. how pathetic!! If you don't have the money then why wud u assume stealing?? Jail is not worth $69!

The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple.
The statutes of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart: the commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes.
Psalms 19:7

God bless you Lorena.

El Siervo,
Before we go and ask the Lord to bless Lorena, should we not ask why she has broken one of the Commandments? Not only do I believe in these religious and moral decrees, I also abide by them. A simple thought...responsibility.

Don Dave

hahahahahahahahahaha okay dude it was a comment, she was being nice and wishing the best for someone who may be going through something whether its their fault or not. dude do u have a heart or is it a moral decree to pass judgement on , oh yah dude u believe in these religious and moral decree who must point out they abide by them as well as if he is someone more important, responsibility means for me to point out that you do not have to be a dick , and that people make mistakes even you!!!!!!!

Add a new category to Lorena Tavera's professional resume:
"Runaway Modeling"

She needs to get a real job like the rest of us.

Sun City Winona!!!!

Great! What other examples of bad behavior do we need? Here is what her MasterCard commercial would be:

Ms. Tavera's Friday trip to the mall: $0
Ms. Tavera's decision to "buy" shirt: $300
Ms. Tavera's price of stupidity and inability to get any other gigs: Priceless.
