Former El Paso Police Chief Carlos Leon was recovering in critical, but stable, condition at University Medical Center Wednesday night, according to hospital staff.
Leon was seriously injured in a motorcycle accident outside Mesilla around 10:00 a.m. Wednesday morning.
Investigators say Leon was headed north on N.M. Highway 28 when he was hit by a pickup truck at the intersection of Snow Road.
He was airlifted to the hospital.
Deputies say the driver of the pickup initially left the scene of the accident, but later returned with his employer.
Investigators are still trying to determine what caused the accident.
No one has been cited.
A woman who lives at the corner of the intersection told NewsChannel 9 she's seen 3 serious accidents in the past three months.
