This election is so important, casting a vote was one Florida man's last wish before dying.
Lloyd Chamberlain made sure to mail his absentee ballot while on the way to the hospital.
"He was a wonderful soul," said friend Nicole Payne.
Payne knew and admired Lloyd Chamberlain for close to 20 years.
Chamberlain left home a few days ago, on the way to a triple bypass operation.
Before leaving, he did two things.
He gave his wife of 33 years his wedding ring, and he put his absentee ballot in the mail.
He died after 11 hours on the operating table.
But the absentee ballot made it.
"It was postmarked before he died, so it counts," said Supervisor of Elections Bert Childress.
Chamberlain was only 54.
His presidential vote was for John McCain.
He worked at the Kennedy Space Center for years, and his passion was working on old cars at home.
And his final wish, at four in the morning before the risky surgery, was to make sure his vote was counted.
The Supervisor of Elections says Chamberlain's act is inspirational, and hopes it spurs more people to exercise a precious right.
