Wild weather during monsoon season in El Paso leaves behind a big mess - mainly, flood damage to homes and businesses.

In light of the recent storms, insurance companies urge locals to purchase flood insurance.

One local State Farm Insurance agent told NewsChannel 9 that a lot of people don't know that most homeowners insurance policies don't cover flood damage -- it's a completely separate policy you can buy through the National Flood Insurance Program, which is run by FEMA.

Elizabeth Campos, a State Farm Insurance agent, said there are three important steps to follow after being hit by the wild weather -- Report, Repair, and Record.

Campos urges you to contact your insurance agent and report damages to your home after the storm has hit.

Also, make temporary repairs, if it's safe for you to do so, and save receipts, to prevent any more damages from happening. For example, remove wet carpets and bedding from the home to prevent mold.

And finally, make a list of all the damages and take lots of pictures. Campos said this will help you later collect money for repairs.

Most importantly, don't wait until disaster strikes to get flood insurance.

"El Paso most of the year is very dry, they sometimes don't see the need for it because their area hasn't flooded in 10 years, for example. But it's just that one time when you have that one loss that you think, well, maybe i should have gotten it," said Campos.

A flood insurance policy normally takes 30 days from the day you buy it to go into effect. State Farm recommends you look into the coverage ahead of time.

If you already have the coverage and report a claim, it takes up to 30 days for the insurance company to repair the damages.
