The El Paso scene can delve into some food for the soul this First Friday of the month, thanks to a musical project of sorts bringing together some of the most seasoned musicians in the city.

The Soul Project starts with a composition book. The mind of lead singer Selina Nevarez converts to black and white scribbles, and wiggles it's way out through her mic to join the minds of the rest of the talent.

"We start on a whim, somebody can just start off with an idea, and adds their little two cents," Nevarez said. "That's the way music should be."

It's much more than two cents as this rich ensemble consists of a horn line, with Rick Rodriguez on trumpet and Cindy Gutierrez on flute. They have a touch of classical funk with the "Dangerstein Violin" i.e. David Angerstein, who joins the strings of guitarist Adrian Esparza and bassist Martin Bencomo.

When you throw drummer "Jay-Jay" Hernandez into the mix, you end up with
a Soul Project comprised of longtime friends.

"Friend labor is what I call it," Gutierrez said. "It's free 'cause we're friends, and I've always wanted to work with Selina."

They have an evolutionary sound that mixes a little bit of everything, from reggae, to rock, jazz, pop and blues, expressive of the uniqueness brewing out of El Paso.

"I really think  we are the music capital of Texas and the United States, there's so many diferent genres," Bencomo said.

Nevarez chimed in with pride for her community.

"We can all benefit from each other in this community, if we just learn how to appreciate each other and work together and just really appreciate what we have. It's an amazing town."

An amazing town, bursting with it's own musical culture.

The soul project has a show Feb. 23 at Joe Vinny and Bronsons at 9 p.m. Fans can expect their first album this summer.
