Monday, July 30, 2012 - 7:50pm

Thousands of students in the Socorro Independent School District are heading back to class for the beginning of the 2012-2013 school year. The district is the second largest school district in the city with 4500 students. School administrators anticipate upwards of 1500 new students will enroll this year. Returning students are also experiencing several changes.

Hueco Tanks Elementary School has upgraded from swamp cooling to refrigerated air. Socorro Independent School District Assistant Superintendent Pat O'Neill says "We're very excited this year and we're very excited for our students."

The Socorro District is also still searching for a new superintendent and a board meeting will be held in the coming weeks to select a new administrator.
