Fireworks sales in New Mexico start today
The skies in New Mexico will be lighting up this year.
Fireworks sales began today in Mesilla in preparation for Fourth of July festivities.
However- the Doña Ana County and the City of Las Cruces have banned the use of all fireworks in areas that are partially or completely covered by timber, brush, or native grass.
Officials recommend residents to discharge their fireworks only in paved areas and to have readily accessible water sources.
" Make people clear that if you buy a restricted fireworks in another area lets say you go to Texas or Arizona and you bring those fireworks here if the local law doesn't allow them you can still be held liable and be fined for that," said Kevin Hoban, Fire Chief, Mesilla Fire Department.
Illegal fireworks use can result in fines of up to $300 or 90 days in jail.
